Encryption at Rest for FileRunner: A Gift from Sohonet for the Holiday Season

FileRunner IconOur customers’ files will be even more safe and snug as they “rest” this Holiday season, all thanks to our recent updates to FileRunner — the definitive, browser-based file transfer service for the Media & Entertainment Industry.

What Have We Done?

While FileRunner has always used SSL encryption in transit, one of the most-requested security features for our flagship file transfer service has been Encryption at Rest for packages stored on our servers. We are pleased to tell you that we have rolled out Encryption at Rest for all FileRunner accounts as of today, December 20, 2016.

Your FileRunner™ Packages are Now Safer than Ever

FileRunner is a store-and-forward solution, designed to remove the requirement for you to host your own server somewhere on your network (but accessible via the Internet) for recipients to download file packages you want to send. In FileRunner, your packages are uploaded to Sohonet’s private FileStore storage service. Packages remain available only to authorized users (the people you sent them to) for 5 days before being deleted. We have deployed Encryption at Rest in FileStore to automatically protect your packages as they await delivery, so that the entire chain from you to your recipients is now more secure.

Do You Have To Do Anything?

Your packages are already being encrypted, so there’s nothing you need to do except sleep a little better at night.

Do All Users Get This Feature?

Yes. Everybody. We wanted to make a joke about how it’s like winning the lottery, but then we would probably have to give everyone lots of money. Because of lawyers. So, we’ll skip that part. Your data is encrypted at rest, though.

Anything Else?

If you hadn’t noticed, a little earlier this year, we stopped charging for excess storage and also for transit fees for delivering packages to users who aren’t on the Sohonet Media Network. We didn’t make a big deal about it at the time, but you’re welcome.   If you are a FileRunner customer with questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your Customer Success Manager or Account Manager.
