SIGGRAPH 2016: Roundup

Olivia Broadley
SIGGRAPH 2016 wrapped up at the end of last week and it really proved that the show just keeps getting better. With loads of fantastic content and great talks, everyone involved in pulling together this event should be congratulated on cultivating such top-notch material from the game and film industries. Sohonet’s highlights! The ‘Teapot’ Competition As Platinum Sponsors of the show, Sohonet ran a little competition, offering full conference badges to the conference. All applicants had to do was answer the following question to be in with a chance to win. Screen Shot 2016-08-03 at 10.50.35What is ‘The Teapot’ otherwise know as? The answer was…..The Utah Teapot. Which is of course a 3D computer model that has now become a standard reference object in computer graphics. It’s also become somewhat of an ‘in-joke’  to hide the Utah teapot in a film’s scenes. Look out for it next time you watch Toy Story or Monsters, Inc! Congratulations to our winners Jean-Francois Pannisset of Psyop and David Altenau of FuseFX, we hope you enjoyed the show! Google Cloud Platform Happy Hour Goolge cloud platformBig thanks to our partners Google Cloud Platform, who kindly invited the Sohonet gang and our guests along to happy hour drinks at Roy’s down the road – it was much appreciated by all after a busy day at the show. We also greatly enjoyed the Google (GCP) sessions ‘Rendering in 2016 and Beyond’ – which, led by both rendering and VFX experts discussed how cutting-edge technology has opened up fast and powerful avenues to tackle the challenges of rendering in todays’s media climate. We hope others also got a chance to see the GCP session ‘Data Processing in the Cloud’, an innovative discussion on cloud-based processing (batch rendering, simulations and transcoding) and network, storage and performance.
