Overview
Sohonet talks to Sven Pape AKA ‘This Guy Edits’, on his fresh perspective on the Auteur Theory, if directors who edit are BETTER directors and how ClearView Flex has helped shape his views.
Challenge
After watching his young daughter produce short films and upload them to YouTube a lightbulb switched for Sven, he realised that even despite his 20 year career, his daughter had a “better [editing] education” than he did as she was “learning to create and tell stories first hand.” This then led to Pape to start his own YouTube channel where he initially shared his opinion on how individual feature films were made in the edit.
Solution
“This Guy Edits” was inaugurated as a result of exploring the “creative aspects of how to build drama through editing.” Following the rapid success of this channel, Pape now employs editors in North America & internationally to cut videos for the channel and he is using ClearView Flex to “communicate in real time with editors.” Pape states that ClearView Flex allowed and provided a “collaborative way to look at the timeline [together with the team] throughout the entire process.”
An example of this collaboration can be seen in the fact that through using ClearView Flex, he was able to suggest creative ideas to 2021 Academy Award winning director Chloe Zhao (Nomadland). Where these ideas and collaborations have traditionally had to be made face to face, ClearView Flex has allowed Pape and his team to “play with footage in real time and make notes without delay.”
We can see an example of this collaboration in Pape’s video ‘Director vs Editor.’ Through using ClearView Flex, Sven was able to suggest creative ideas to the 2021 Academy Award winning director Chloe Zhao (Nomadland) remotely, in real time. Where these ideas and collaborations have had to be made face to face, ClearView Flex has allowed Pape and his team to “play with footage in real time and make notes without delay.”
Result
Film theorist and director Vsevolod Pudovkin was the first to recognise the editing process as only one element of the production process. Pape subscribes to this view adding that there is an intrinsic relationship between the emotional content of a scene (aided by the actor and director) and proper editing. Through using ClearView and via the medium of his YouTube channel, Pape states that he wants to make people feel “really excited about the process of cutting a film and also appreciate the invisible artist in the cutting room.”
