Terry Karapiperi is the Operations Manager for Production Technology at Lucasfilm, where she focuses on improving the systems that support storytelling behind the scenes. With a blend of creative roots and a builder’s mindset, she brings resilience and a commitment to continuous improvement to an ever-evolving industry.
I work as the Operations Manager for Production Technology at Lucasfilm. I focus on the engine behind the scenes, streamlining our processes to make us better, faster, and more effective. My work is a journey of continuous improvement, and I find great joy in the steady evolution of our department.
It’s funny how life works. I grew up in a family of actors and playwrights, but as a kid, I actually resisted the industry! My father’s influence instead taught me the practical side of building and fixing things.
I eventually fell into film by accident, simply by being willing to learn and take on any challenge. I soon realised that Operations is where my two worlds meet: I have my family's creative DNA, but my father’s ‘builder’ mindset.
It turns out I was always meant to be here—building the systems that allow our stories to be told.
The most empowering advice I’ve received is: 'Don’t seek perfection; seek progress.'
In operations, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by everything that could be better. Realising that resilience isn't about getting it right the first time, but about the perseverance to keep refining and iterating, changed how I lead. It shifted my focus from 'fixing' to 'evolving,' which is much more empowering.
The film industry is incredibly tough, but my advice is: don’t let the pressure diminish your spirit.
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, but this work is also immensely fun. The rewards are everywhere—from the iconic content you help bring to life to the incredible people you work alongside. You will face challenges that seem impossible, but overcoming them together is where the magic happens.
Above all, be yourself. Your unique perspective is your greatest asset in an industry that is constantly evolving.
My advice would be: 'Trust your ability to figure it out.'
When I started, I didn't have a grand plan; I just had a hunger to learn and a willingness to take on any challenge. I’d tell my younger self that being 'the one who shows up' is a superpower. You don’t need to have the next ten years mapped out—your resilience and work ethic will build the road as you walk it.
For me, International Women’s Day is about honouring the journey.
It takes a great deal of resilience to find your voice and your place in a demanding industry. I’m celebrating the perseverance it takes to remain curious and open to new challenges, even when the path isn't clear.
It’s a day to remind one another that being yourself—and bringing your specific strengths to the table—is the most powerful way to inspire change and help others do the same.
