Behind Netflix's Emmy-nominated Monster: Bind Studio and FileRunner on the VFX pipeline

Our partners at BIND Studio have published a great case study on the VFX workflow behind Netflix's Monster: The Ed Gein Story, with Sohonet's FileRunner playing a part in the pipeline. For the third season of Netflix's Monster, the post team faced a familiar problem at unfamiliar scale: hundreds of shots from VFX vendor Folks VFX, with editorial and production needing to stay in sync on every one of them.

Each episode of The Ed Gein Story carried anywhere from 100 to 350 VFX shots, from blood and gore enhancements to invisible digital cleanup. Materials moved daily between editorial, the vendor and Netflix, and the team needed a clear, fast way to keep review and approval on track. VFX Producer Rae Welty and her team turned to BIND Hub.

The old process was manual. Every new VFX version had to be cut into the timeline by an editor or assistant before anyone could see it, which meant booked rooms, scheduled sessions and cross-department diary juggling, sometimes just to check a single shot.

Working with BIND Studio, the production paired BIND Hub with Autodesk Flow Production Tracking (ShotGrid) and Sohonet's FileRunner, connecting transfer, tracking and review into one automated workflow. FileRunner kept the shot packages moving; the moment they landed, BIND Hub turned them into ready-to-watch playlists.
